The History of Stretch Ceilings
Stretch ceilings can appear to be a thoroughly modern invention, yet the basic idea of placing a tensioned material beneath a structural ceiling has much older roots.
Modern stretch ceilings developed during the twentieth century from much earlier decorative fabric treatments. The first commercial stretch ceiling manufactured by Normalu appeared in France in 1969, followed by increasingly advanced membranes, perimeter tracks, lighting systems and acoustic applications.
Today, stretch ceilings can provide far more than a smooth decorative finish. They can conceal building services, diffuse architectural lighting, support acoustic control and form bespoke three-dimensional features across commercial and residential interiors.
